Oklahoma School Report Cards

March 1, 2019

Yesterday, the Oklahoma State Board of Education approved the release of the Oklahoma School Report Cards as required by state statute.  These new accountability reports are very different than previous versions of A-F Report Cards and are calculated using data from the 2017-18 school year.

The newly redesigned report cards no longer emphasize letter grades but will support us in our efforts, through our strategic plan, to make meaningful school improvement.  This newest report card includes a growth component that will allow us to look at each student individual student and how we can better provide a strong, rigorous education for all ECP students.

As you look at the report card, you will notice another significant change; a focus on chronic absenteeism.  We know from research, and as evidenced by your own classroom experiences that students who are chronically absent tend to struggle in school academically and are far more likely to drop out of school.  We know that chronic absenteeism is not something that can be fixed overnight, but it is something we can begin working on, together, to help those students who need us the most.

As educators, we have an obligation to look at available data to better understand the students we serve.  We will use the data to work from our students’ strengths to help them overcome their challenges.  What we will not do is place a higher value on increasing letter grades over doing what is best for our ECP students.

The new accountability reports will inform our path towards continuous improvement.  We will continue to focus on our strategic plan goal areas of Educational Excellence, Culture and Climate, and Personnel and Property through participating in professional development, focusing on the educating the whole child, and building each other up as a community with a common purpose.  This is how we will improve our learning environment and this is how we will combat chronic absenteeism.

No single snapshot, taken on a single day, can tell the whole picture of what we do every day for the students of ECP.  While we must have some form of accountability, we will continue to tell our story and not let someone else tell it for us.  The outcome of our work is not a letter grade, rather, it is the students in our classrooms and hallways.  It is in knowing that each day YOU made a difference, each day you showed up to teach, and each day you fulfilled your purpose.
